Snapshots in Operating Rooms

Fixing the heart problems

Here is the TV news that showed I operated with a new approach of heart transplant in Indianapolis in 2012.

In Indiana University (IU) Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, the thoracic transplant team led by Drs. Wozniak, Wang, and Hashmi introduced the TransMedic system that transports the procured heart beating in a box mimicking physiological condition with real-time monitoring.  I was so excited to operate with them in the first human case that turned into a very successful story.

This is the case of heart tumor that I excised in Taiwan in 2013

The photo showed a stopped heart on heart-lung machine and it was cut open.  The unusual case with dual presentation of stroke and heart attack was published in a medical journal (Medicine 2015; 94 (38): e1602).  The emergent operation was done in Taipei Tzuchi Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, in 2014.  The tumor proved to be atrial myxoma.  I did a similar case in China Medical University Hospital, Taichung, 2019 and it turned out to be a extremely rare tumor, angiosarcoma.  I felt so proud and happy that my patients recovered well after my operations.

This is the view of an opened chest for a heart operation I did in 2017

This chest opening, officially also known as "sternotomy", is the the first step to expose the heart, beating at first but then stopped when ready on heart-lung machine.  The photo was taken as looking from head to toes.  It was an emergent case of acute aortic dissection that I operated on in Taipei Medical University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, in 2017.  The patient recovered well and just returned from a trip to DisneyLand in Tokyo, Japan.  I felt so happy that we could conquer the lethal disease.

A Dedicated Professional

To Seek Success

Here is the photo of me operating with full gears in cath lab of Taipei Tzuchi Hospital, New Taipei City, Taiwan, in 2016

The case I was operating on had a complicated condition that needed both cardiovascular surgeon and interventional cardiologist.  Dr. Dian-Yu Wu, the cardiologist, consulted me for the surgical part, and took the photo of me.  I brought everything from operating room and completed the procedure as planned.  I felt so satisfied with the clinical outcome of this combined approach.

This is the image of my successful Sun's operation for type-A aortic dissection, in Taipei Medical University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, in 2018.

The computed tomography angiography (CTA) was taken 9 months after Sun's operation done by me for acute type-A aortic dissection.  The patient just returned from a trip to DisneyLand in Tokyo, Japan, with everything excellent.  I was very satisfied with the outcomes of this surgical procedure.

Here is the image of my successful operation for traumatic acute type-B aortic dissection, in Taipei, Taiwan, in 2018

The case, a victim of an explosion, had special neck artery bypass because of a giant thyroid tumor.  I did the Zone-1 TEVAR (thoracic endovascular aortic repair) operation with Medtronic devices, in Taipei Medical University Hospital, Taipei, Taiwan, in 2018.  The CTA was taken 3 months after the operation and the patient was having an uneventful life.  I felt so proud because I handled the complicated surgical condition well.
